How To Reduce Hydraulic Cylinder Repair Cost?

Nowadays, hydraulic cylinders are as common as motors and pumps combined. If you have been operating a lot of hydraulic equipment, it is likely that you may have incurred huge repair expense as it is a part of the total operational cost.

According to a research, 25% of the total mechanical equipment failure is experienced due to the failure of design. If this concept is applied to a hydraulic cylinder, then one in every four hydraulic cylinders is not adequately designed. However, this does not mean that it will not be able to the job it has been designed to do, rather it will have a low acceptable service life.

If you are experiencing some problem with your hydraulic cylinder, chances are that you may need to address one or more of the following issues. Read on to know more.

Bent Rods
Bending of cylinder rods is generally caused by insufficient material strength or rod diameter. Once the rod is bent, the deforming load gets placed on the rod seal. This further increases leakage and results in failure of the seal. So to check the allowable rod loading for a cylinder, use the Euler formula.

Rod Finish
The life of the rod seal significantly affects the surface finish of the cylinder rod. Therefore, if the surface roughness is low, the seal life is reduced because of inadequate lubrication. On the contrary, if the surface roughness is too high, an unacceptable level of leakage may be observed.
Therefore, if you want to extend the cylinder service life, make sure the rod surface is lubricated and treat it accordingly. In some cases, installation of bellows can also help protect the rod surface.

Insufficient Bearing Area
If you think that the surface area of the bearing band on the piston or in the gland is insufficient to support the thrust which is transferred to the cylinder, this can lead to deformation of the seals.

Ballooned Tubes
Ballooning of the cylinder can also cause premature failure. This phenomenon is generally caused by insufficient material strength or wall thickness. Once the tube balloons, the tolerance between tube walls and piston seal is lost. This cause high-pressure fluid to pass through the seal, leading to premature failure of piston seal.
